With a background in science, Katia Santibañez often looks to nature for inspiration, recently even using a microscope to examine nature's most basic elements. As an artist, Katia Santibañez believes in experimenting, exploring and using as many tools as possible in her work. She turned to the camera to explore new subjects that couldn't be fully expressed through painting or drawing. The camera allows her to capture specific moments in time and to expand her work in new directions, such as video that incorporates voice and music. Through the continued use of new media and methods, Santibañez creates relationships with worlds that grow and deepen with each work. Katia Santibañez was born in Paris, France in 1964. She was trained in Microbiology and Biochemistry before getting her degree in 1990 at the Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. She then moved to New York and has exhibited widely there since 1998, including solo exhibitions at Morgan Lehman Gallery and Danese, and group shows at Pace Prints and Jeff Bailey Gallery. She has been a resident at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York, and at Sitka Center on the Oregon coast. Her paintings, drawings, and prints are in numerous public and private collections. Santibañez lives and works in New York City and in the Berkshires.
